What is Taiko? Taiko is the art of Japanese Drumming. It is an ancient, sacred practice in Japan. Taiko Drumming has been an important part of the Japanese Culture for hundreds of years, in fact it is said that Taiko is the heartbeat of Japan. Drums were used in ancient Japan to communicate between villages, announce celebrations and to signal emergencies. Farmers used to call the gods to awaken the spirits of rain, to drive away pests in rice fields, and to give thanks to the gods at harvest time. Modern Taiko combines the elements of spirit, rhythm, harmony, movement, voice, dance and group dynamics. When these elements are put together, we create an incredibly dynamic and fascinating performing art. What do I need in order to Play Taiko?

An interesting and innovative take on Aerobics as we know it is establishing itself south of the border-the Canadian border that is. Taikofit, which combines Japanese Drumming with Aerobics, landed in Tucson after Canadian Michelle Unrau certified four Tucsonans in recently. It is the first time Taikofit has been in the United States, and classes are filling up at a Mo-Sun Art and Wellness Center in south tucson.
“It is the next generation of aerobics,” says Unrau, the founder of Taikofit. Starting with aerobics as a foundation, Japanese Drumming is added, called “Taiko,” providing a full body, low-impact workout; plus, participants get to bang on the drums.
Says Mo Sullivan, a new instructor, “It is a great stress reliever that really gets the heart going in more ways than one, we really love it.”
Currently, Taikofit classes are being held Saturday Mornings from 9AM to 10AM at Mo-Sun Art and Wellness Center. Classes for local area children are also available. All ages classes are being formed on an as needed basis. We can also come to your business or activity for demo and regular classes
